‘Knack for the ball’ Haason Reddick isn’t just good at getting his hands on quarterbacks

Haason Reddick’s sack numbers generate all the headlines.

But there are sneaky good elements to the 29-year-old edge rusher’s game the New York Jets have been lacking for years.

Reddick has forced 14 fumbles over the past four seasons, including 5 in 2022 and six in 2020 when he was a member of the Cardinals.

That’s uncharted territory for Gang Green.

No New York Jets forced more than two fumbles last season.

And dating back to 2014, no player has recorded five forced fumbles. (Javelin Guidry came closest, forcing four in 2020)

Reddick has simply had a knack for getting his hands on the ball as a Pro.

He’s recorded 19 passes defended, showing off his ability to drop in coverage, when needed.

That too may be an element the Defensive Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich could use to confuse offenses in 2024.

Both Reddick and another speedster, Will McDonald IV, have traits that could have quarterbacks second-guessing whether one is planning to apply pressure or drop back into coverage.

“He’s got a knack for the ball,” Fletcher Cox told media following a game in 2022. “A lot of people go for the big hit on the quarterback but I think getting the ball out … That’s what we talk about a lot, ‘Let’s get the ball out. Let’s give our offense a chance to be in position to go score.’“

“Obviously a big hit is good for a sack, but you’re getting the ball out, that’s like a double-up. You get a sack and a strip and hopefully one of the guys on the defense recovers.”

Reddick has made a career of that.

And it’s something that their recent pass-rushers (Huff, Lawson) weren’t known for. In fact, in four years as a Jet, Huff had just one forced fumble.

For as dominant as the Jets defense often has been the past two seasons, a boost in turnovers could make it even better in 2024.
