Bryce Huff

Jets could get major Compensatory pick in 2025 for Bryce Huff departure

The New York Jets may regret their decision to let Bryce Huff enter last season without locking him up to an extension.

That deal came Monday as the twitchy fast edge rusher signed a 3 year, $51 million deal to join another mean green defensive line.

That of the Philadelphia Eagles.

But the notion that the New York Jets will end up with nothing from the move is short-sighted.

Given the length and size of Huff’s day one deal – and the snaps he’ll likely receive to earn it in 2024, the New York Jets could end up with a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick for their loss.

Jets fans easily forget the formula’s value as the team is typically a big spender, and low impact player loser each March.

This month, the team received 3 picks, including a sixth and two sevenths, for losing several key contributors in 2023.

No doubt, the team will add a few of its own picks.

But barring a monster splash at OL this week (a top guard?), it’s very possible the Jets free agency additions will be offset by other free agency losses such as their starting safety Jordan Whitehead, Center Connor McGovern or Quinton Jefferson.

No, the New York Jets aren’t a better team today without Huff, an undrafted free agent who developed into a star. (And now, very rich man).

But they’ll likely see a significant return next year.

And one that would have been more valuable the the pick they would have received early in 2023.
